Meet Nikkie

"Together, we can create vibrant communities of belonging for generations to come."

Nikkie To is an inclusive designer dedicated to fostering communities of belonging through collaboration. Rooted in her purpose-driven approach to build equitable futures, she designs journeys that inspire and support people to connect, navigate complexity, and pursue their collective visions.

With 5 years of experience in advancing social change, BDEI (Belonging, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion), and accessibility, she brings expertise in community engagement and facilitation, design thinking, foresight, and evaluation. She has worked on projects across a range of sectors including arts and culture, education, healthcare, housing, natural resources, and transportation.

Most notably, she led the development of an award-winning Sensory Design Guideline in partnership with Grandview Kids to improve sensory inclusion in healthcare spaces for children and youth with disabilities. Co-designed by and for the community, these guidelines are being implemented in Grandview Kids’ new centre in Ajax.

Working alongside Accessibility Institute at Carleton University, she supported the creation of a Neuroinclusive Standards Development toolkit, promoting accessibility in standards development processes. She has also worked with City of Hamilton to design and facilitate a multi-stakeholder consultation to develop comprehensive human-rights-based and health-focused recommendations to support the needs of people living unsheltered in encampments within the city. She is also experienced in strategic planning within the not-for-profit and public sectors.

She holds a Master of Design in Inclusive Design from OCAD University with a specialization in the design of healthcare environments, and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from McMaster University.
